Abstract

The article deals with the characterization of period in the works of Charles Dickens and William Thackeray. The story of an orphan who escapes from a workhouse and finds himself in a den of thieves shocked readers when it was first published. Dickens writes of childhood innocence surrounded by evil and cruelty, depicting the dark underworld of nineteenth-century London, populated by vivid, memorable characters.
